Television
I don't watch any TV these days. On rare occasions, I regret this.
- Babylon 5
- Probably the closest thing to "hard" sci-fi that will ever grace
television. Obsessive attention to detail (scientific and otherwise),
excellent storyline and plot, and excellent characterization. Marred by
low production values (albeit good on a per-dollar basis), an uneven cast,
a mad rush in Season 4 to wrap up the plot, and a weaker Season 5 when the
show unexpectedly survived. However, if you can put up with the
occasional annoyances, it's an excellent series.
- Stargate: SG-1 [Unofficial: GateWorld] [Unofficial: Sphinx Stargate]
- An excellent sci-fi television series up through Season 3 to 4 or so;
less so in later seasons. Sadly, by season 10 the show had jumped the
shark so many times that even the shark didn't care anymore.
- Farscape
- Rather soft on the "sci" part of sci-fi, really more of a space opera,
but a fairly solid show, and the wrap-up miniseries did a decent job of
tying up the most critical loose ends.
- The X Files
- 5 seasons of campy fun, then 5 more seasons of "Why, God? Why?". I
used to be a major X-phile, but the show took a nosedive after the
movie, Fight the Future. Noteworthy episodes include Bad
Blood and Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose.
Movies
I'll put a couple of my favorite movies up here as they come to me.
- LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring [Official: LOTR.net]
- What can I say? This movie is truly amazing, especially if you have
an encyclopedia or well-informed friend to fill you in on all the
backstory. Plus it inspired a bunch of pervy hobbit fanciers.
- Aliens
- This is my favorite of the "Alien" series. All in all, it's a solid
sci-fi action flick with a high rewatchability factor. If you can find
it, I highly recommend the Special Edition; the pacing is much slower,
so it's understandable why they cut so much from the theater release,
but it explains more of the storyline.
